Debian install kde instead of gnome

Tasksel is a tool available for Debian and Ubuntu. Essentially, it automates the entire installation process. Taskel is a terminal based software, so it runs within the terminal once you start it.

Also, tasksel requires sudo to install some of the software, such as the desktop environments. When you run the tasksel, first a software selection will show up. Here you need to choose which desktop environment to install. The installation process will take couple of minutes to install and during the installation process, you may get a prompt where it will ask you to choose which display manager to choose to run and manage the KDE desktop if you have multiple desktop managers installed.

I have that case and I choose the lightdm. Select the display manager to finish the installation. Once the installation is complete, the tasksel will close and return to the regular terminal.

And that is it. The entire installation process is automatic, no prompts during the installation. All methods are pretty simple and easy to use in order to install KDE plasma on Debian.

In the end, you choose which method you prefer and more familiar with. But again, please note, your mileage may wary and it may not turn out so easy and with no issues. Post by MeanDean » I refer to apt-get by the the packagename which contains it and that is apt. It doesn't appear that aptitude replaces anything since they are both available. Maybe somone should list what parts it does replace and which is doesn't since we all know it doesn't replace apt-cdrom either but does seem to replace apt-cache or does it use apt-cache for the search?

But yea, I know what you are saying and I agree I should be more specific but it is such a flame worthy topic I just cant resist. Once thing about bugs me about aptitude is if you try to install something you already have or if you misspell the name of a package you want to install - it takes forever exaggeration of course and never give you any meaningful message like 'that packge is already the newest version' or 'cant find that package' or something.

Post by BioTube » I never liked aptitude. I prefer the ability to leave automatically installed packages sometimes I use them by themselves. Also, sidux is not sid, but it's based on it it's supposed to be a stablized version of sid. To get real Debian, just point your sources to the Debian server and change to testing if you're not ready to handle your computer turning on in the middle of the night just to break itself - funny things have happened in unstable.

And apt is a library. Aptitude does roll them all up into one, but can be hard as hell to use if you screw up kinda like that one text editor most people don't know how to quit.
